The Challenge
Modern travel is expected to be seamless and effortless. Yet in reality, navigating airports and cities often means juggling multiple belongings, from jackets to personal bags, while on the move.Managing these extra items alongside a trolley suitcase remains a persistent challenge. Existing solutions tend to be improvised, unstable, and ultimately inconvenient.FLYNKA identified the need for a simple, reliable solution designed to integrate naturally into the travel experience.
The Solution
The Urban Travel Carabiner is a refined, minimal accessory designed to simplify movement on the go. By offering a secure and intuitive way to carry additional items, it eliminates the need for improvised solutions.Blending seamlessly into a modern urban aesthetic, it brings clarity, order, and ease to everyday travel.
A Hidden Friction in Everyday Travel
Traveling involves constant movement and multitasking. Through observation, we identified a recurring pain point: travelers struggle to securely attach additional personal items - such as handbags, duty-free bags, or coffee cups - to their carry-on luggage. This often leads to stress, inconvenience, and unnecessary friction during what should be smooth transitions between destinations.
Designed for Real Movement
The Urban Travel Carabiner was designed for moments of constant motion - airports, streets, train platforms, and transitions in between.The interaction is intentionally simple: attach, secure, move on. Every element was refined to feel natural in use, allowing the product to support fluid movement rather than interrupt it.
CMF Focus
Color, material, and finish were treated as core design elements from the outset. The CNC-milled aluminum carabiner delivers a precise, high-quality feel, while carefully selected textile materials balance durability with flexibility. Color choices were intentionally reduced to create a calm, timeless aesthetic and to establish a consistent CMF language that will carry across future FLYNKA products.
A Strategic Design Collaboration
As FLYNKA’s first product, the collaboration focused on defining a clear design DNA to carry across future products. Through an iterative process of research and prototyping, functional requirements were aligned with a consistent visual and material language — creating a foundation built on clarity, durability, and purposeful design.
Working with FLUID on the Urban Travel Carabiner was truly unique: I came in with the core problem, a rough idea, and lots of material samples to align on haptics and form language. From those puzzle pieces, the team crafted a distinctive, original solution step by step—and that’s why I’m excited to continue our collaboration. Seeing the final result felt like an Apple keynote—precise, impressive, and unforgettable.
Highlights & Capabilities
Persona based Color, Material & Finish
To ensure the Color, Material & Finish as well as the touch and feel perfectly align with the target user and intended function, we tested multiple samples and comparable products. This hands-on evaluation helped us identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
Prototyping Through Iteration
The Urban Travel Carabiner required extensive prototyping and real-world testing. Multiple iterations were developed to evaluate mechanics, materials, and ergonomics, ensuring reliability under everyday travel conditions. This iterative approach allowed design decisions to be validated through use, resulting in a refined and dependable final product.
